The event will be structured into two different sections: Register here! About the project. ALFA is an EU-funded project that aims at enhancing the uptake of biogas in livestock farming by providing farmers and other relevant stakeholders with a series of demand-driven business and technical support services, as well as organising webinars, seminars, networking events, site visits and awareness-raising campaigns. ALFA has implemented its activities across six EU countries (Belgium, Denmark, Greece, Italy, Slovakia, and Spain). The project has also conducted research to define local framework conditions and uncover challenges and has developed a platform of tools to facilitate collaboration among industry actors and to help estimate a farm’s biogas production potential, together with its prospect of profit as well as environmental and social impacts. To conclude all its work, the project will develop policy recommendations and a replication guide. Information about the project can be found here: https://alfa-res.eu/ & https://alfaep.eu/

The 1-day introduction course provides a comprehensive overview of the rapidly growing and diverse biogas sector, which spans agriculture, waste management, and energy production. It begins with an exploration of market dynamics, offering insights into the current state of the sector, its future role in the energy transition, and the broader economic and environmental benefits of biogas. The course also examines support mechanisms at both European and national levels, illustrated through case studies, and discusses the main opportunities and challenges the sector faces. The production section delves into the full biogas and biomethane production process, from feedstock and anaerobic digestion to final products like biomethane, biogenic CO₂, and digestate. It also covers upgrading technologies and key health and safety considerations. The final section focuses on legislation, providing a detailed overview of the European regulatory framework, including the Renewable Energy Directive, sustainability criteria, greenhouse gas emissions, biogenic CO₂ regulation, digestate requirements, gas network access, and permitting procedures. The course concludes with a Q&A session and a summary of the key points, along with a forward-looking perspective on the sector’s development. The European biogas and biomethane market is experiencing rapid growth, with a 37% increase in biogas capacity across the continent. As this expansion continues, the importance of biogases in meeting climate targets becomes increasingly evident. Biogases, which are fully interchangeable with fossil natural gas, offer a renewable alternative already used in heating, industry, and transport. To ensure sustainability, biogases must be clearly defined and certified by independent third-party bodies, which validate their environmental integrity. This certification enables standardized and transparent trading of biomethane across Europe by detailing its energy and environmental attributes. However, trading remains complex due to differences in how EU Member States connect to the European Gas grid and structure their regulations. This Masterclass provides an in-depth look at the opportunities and challenges of biomethane certification and trading. The first part explores the regulatory framework and the steps required for certification, while the second part focuses on the key elements of trading, showing how producers can benefit from both domestic and cross-border markets. European Biogas Association - 11/07/2025
In 2025, the Salón del Gas Renovable celebrates its fifth edition, following the excellent reception by professionals during last year’s event. Organized by the Spanish Biomass Association (AVEBIOM) and with the Spanish Biogas Association (AEBIG) as technology partner, this annual meeting has become the leading platform for biogas, biomethane and other renewable gases in Spain, Portugal and Latin America. This year’s edition will take place on October 1st and 2nd at Feria de Valladolid, with more than 250 exhibitors and over 3,600 professionals expected. Exhibiting companies will showcase the latest innovations to harness the growing business opportunities in the renewable gas sector across the Iberian Peninsula and beyond. Why participate? Gas demand remains high across Europe. For the renewable gas sector, the challenge is no longer market interest, but ensuring production with quality, traceability and environmental guarantees. The instability of fossil gas markets, rising prices and emission costs, and the urgency of climate commitments are all accelerating the transition. Take the opportunity Spain is now moving firmly to create a stable regulatory framework for renewable gases, in line with the European Green Deal, the updated National Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC), and the EU’s goal of producing 35 bcm of […]

A recent report of Common Futures for the Biomethane Industrial Partnership (BIP) has identified that the emissions of imported or exported biomethane via pipelines is not being accurately tracked between EU Member States for emission inventories prepared for the UNFCCC. This brief report explores starting points for potential solutions to the issues identified in the report. Recommendations:

Initial first-of-its-kind analysis indicates a significant cost-benefit advantage of gas infrastructure over electricity grids. These insights highlight the need to leverage existing gas network assets with biomethane to lower overall energy costs, especially as electricity infrastructure expenses continue to climb rapidly. A recent paper by Common Futures examines the cost advantages of gas distribution grids over electricity distribution grids in Europe, both today and into the future. As Europe moves toward a decarbonised energy system, it is essential to understand the cost dynamics of its infrastructure. With electricity grid costs projected to rise sharply due to substantial investment needs, more detailed analysis and targeted policies are required to understand how lower-cost gas infrastructure can reduce the overall bill. Maintaining and optimising the existing gas grid, while integrating increasing shares of renewable gases, could help to significantly lower overall system costs, reduce the burden on consumers, and accelerate defossilisation through a more integrated energy system approach. Key takeaways of this analysis include:

Brussels, 02/07/2025 – The European Biogas Association (EBA) welcomes the European Commission’s proposed target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 90% by 2040 compared to 1990 levels. This reaffirms the EU’s determination to tackle climate change and shape our path after 2030, to ensure the EU reaches climate neutrality by 2050. It also sends a strong signal that deep decarbonisation across all sectors is both necessary and achievable. Biogases are uniquely positioned to support this transition. As fully renewable, domestically produced energy sources, they can directly reduce emissions in hard-to-abate sectors such as heating, transport, and industry. Today, biogases already deliver 22 billion cubic meters (bcm) of renewable gas to the European market. With €28 billion in private investments expected in the coming years, the sector is poised to scale significantly, potentially reaching 101 bcm by 2040 and covering more than 80% of the EU’s current gas consumption. Despite its transformative potential, the biogases sector remains overlooked in EU energy and climate policies. To change this, the EBA recently published a Roadmap towards 2040 urging the European Commission and Member States to endorse a 100 bcm biogases target for 2040 and launch the European Biogases Charter by 2025. These actions […]
